Water Cooler Talk: Streamside Tree Planting Effectiveness

December 14, 2022 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Streamside Tree Plantings, AKA riparian buffers, are promoted around Pennsylvania and the Chesapeake Bay Watershed as a conservation practice that can improve water quality. These streamside plantings are effective at filtering nutrients and sediment, cooling stretches of streams, and slowing property loss occurring through streambank erosion. However, there are unknowns with this practice and how they perform in areas with complicated water movement (examples: sinkholes and large surface runoff). Water Cooler Talk: Streamside Tree Planting Effectiveness will provide preliminary water quality results from two streamside tree plantings in central Pennsylvania.
