Abandoned Mine Drainage - Pine Forest AMD Project

  • AMD polluted water filters through an ALD where dissolving limestone increases alkalinity and pH levels.
  • Settling ponds allow metals in AMD polluted water to sink to the bottom for periodic removal.
  • Treated water is released to the Mill Creek with significantly reduced metals and a healthier pH level.
  • Educational signage at project site
  • Site in late June 2009
  • creek halfway contaminated by aluminum (white) and half by iron (orange)
  • closer up of site in July 2009
  • Project partners manipulating water levels
  • some of the iron has dropped out of the water, coating the rocks
